The legend of the sauna It is told that in an ancient forest, when the winters were longest, an old woman lived by a lake. Every evening she lit a fire among the stones in her small timber hut and poured water over them – and the rising steam was called löyly, the breath of the fire. Travellers lost in the snow followed the light of her hut. Inside they found warmth, silence and a place by the fire. It was said that whoever sat in the steam left their heavy thoughts among the stones and walked out into the night light as a feather. When the woman grew too old to tend the fire, she passed the key on – with a single promise: the door would always stay open for anyone seeking warmth and stillness. URBASTU wants to carry that story forward.
